Day-long police search ends; suspect found in Frankfort basement with gun

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The man several police agencies have been searching for since early morning, has been captured.

Steven Robert Muller, 25, is in police custody, found in Frankfort around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Muller was the driver of a stolen car that police say had been taken from a Frankfort residence in the early morning hours, and it was believed a shotgun was inside the vehicle.

That same car was present at a four-man fight on Seneca Turnpike in New Hartford shortly thereafter.

Police say Muller and another man fled from the fight in the white car, which was eventually found at the scene of an accident at Higby Road and Valley View Road around 3:30 a.m., with no sign of the gun in the car.

Several schools were put on lockdown, as the accident was roughly a quarter of a mile from Hughes Elementary and Perry Junior High Schools in New Hartford.

Muller is currently at the State Police Barracks in Herkimer where he will be booked on whatever charges police deem appropriate for the crimes they feel were committed. Police would not say at the time of arrest what those charges would be.

The previously mentioned shotgun was found on Muller's person.

He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday evening, possibly in Frankfort Town Court, police said.

After that, he will likely be held in the Herkimer County Jail unless or until bail is set and posted.
