"The Daily Show's" Jon Stewart performs at Hamilton College

By ANDREW DONOVAN

CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - "The Daily Show's" Jon Stewart was the latest speaker in Hamilton College's Sacerdote Great Names Lecture series, performing Friday night at the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Stewart was hit among the large crowd as he discussed politics, society, religion, the school's rivalry with Colgate and Hamilton's mascot.

Stewart has a lot to say about the current political scene, asking the audience if they have witnessed the change they were promised. He referred to President Bush's press conferences as like a 6th grade book report on a book that the student has not read. Stewart also shared his disappointment that gay marriage is still an issue in America.

Stewart took interest in Hamilton's mascot, a pig named Al Ham (for Alexander Hamilton) with a tri-corned hat. He declared it the weirdest thing he had ever seen in his two decades of comedy. He comically referred to the mascot as having a clear identity crisis.

Since arriving in 1999, Stewart and “The Daily Show” have received 24 Emmy Award nominations and won 10 times. These include winning for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program five times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) as well as Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series for the past five consecutive years (2003-2007). Stewart himself has been nominated for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program four times (2002, 2003, 2005 and 2007).

Stewart joins a prestigious list of former speakers, most recently Aretha Franklin. He also joins Tom Brokaw, Bill Cosby, Madeleine Albright, Jimmy Carter, Lady Margaret Thatcher, Colin Powell, and F.W. de Klerk among others in the series.
