SUNYIT on Governor's proposed budget cuts; tuition hikes

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Last week Governor David Paterson proposed major cuts and other measures to balance state's budget, part of that includes raising State of University of New York tuition.

Currently, in-state students pay $4,350 dollars in tuition.

Under the Governor's plan, students would see an increase of 13.8%, which amounts to about $600, starting in Spring.

SUNYIT Admissions Director Jennifer Ninh feels this isn't the time to raise tuition, but doesn't feel as though Paterson's proposal is excessive. She says there are ways to prepare.

"One thing we start with all students is make sure they are aware of the financial aid process, if this does become voted on," Ninh said. "If this is the new price of tuition at any of the state schools, then they are already set up."

Prior to Paterson's proposal, SUNY presidents proposed a 25% increase in tuition.

The SUNY Student Assembly opposes either increase.

According to its website, Assembly officials prefer "rational tuition plan" closer to the 3.6% Higher Education Price Index reflecting inflation and increased costs for colleges.

No action has been taken regarding the proposals, though they may be discussed during a special legislative session regarding the state budget on Tuesday.
