Coping with the Heat; Including Warning Signs of Dehydration (Added 6:20 PM)

"You get used to the heat." said Holly Frederickson, a Jersey Surf Corps member. "You get used to coming out here everyday." Besides all the drums and the other equipment they use, water is also on hand. Every 15 minutes or so you see the performers take a break and take quick sip.

"You can't start drinking soon enough," Dr. Mark Parshall, Rome Memorial Hospital said. "You can easily become 10% dehydrated in a matter of an hour in this type of weather."

Whether you are banging a set of drums or mowing the lawn, doctors recommend drinking plenty of water. They also encourage your to begin drinking water early, the earlier the better. "The number one cause of sinkable episodes of heat exhaustion, which the type of things we see in our ER, is people allowing themselves to become dehydrated."

Tips to Beat the Heat:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Stay indoors

Warning signs of Dehydration:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • You stop sweating

What To Do:

  • Drink more water
  • Drink a sports drink like Gatorade, which is a good source of salt
