Memory checks help awareness of Alzheimer's Disease

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Alzheimer's is a debilitating disease that affects millions of Americans. On Tuesday, those at St. Joseph's Nursing Home wanted to give people the chance to see if they may need to be checked for the disease.

St. Joseph's held memory screenings for anyone who was concerned with memory loss. The tests indicate whether someone should follow up with their doctor to see if they may have Alzheimer's.

Officials say that getting checked is always the best step to take.

"The sooner people deal with this issue in their own personal life, the better for them," said Kathy Poupart, development director at the Nursing Home. "It increases their quality of life and the sooner they can be treated and taken care of."

According to health officials, every 71 seconds someone new is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
