Governor Paterson warns local school districts of future budget cuts
ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Governor David Paterson recently sent a letter to New York State School Board Presidents and District Superintendents warning them to expect more reductions in education spending in next year's budget.
Paterson says the cuts are to help reduce the state's debt which could reach $47 billion dollars over the next four years. Utica School Board President Barb Klein says in anticipation of having to tighten the budget that the district is already making plans. She continues, "So we would be foolish if we ignored the economic impact, and we have started already looking at projects looking at the effectiveness of the programs and whether those are programs we can continue to fund. We are all right for this year, everyone is according to the letter." Klein says the funding from the state for the $187 million capital project will not be affected by the budget cuts. |
