Alleged GPS theft leads police on vehicle and foot chase through Consumer Square

By DAVID DELLECESE

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - They led police on a car and foot chase, but at least they had directions.

New Hartford Police say two men stole GPS units from the Best Buy store on Commercial Drive, and led police on a short vehicle chase through Consumer Square, before a foot pursuit then led to the arrest of one of the suspects.

According to New Hartford Police, they received a call around 4 p.m. Monday afternoon that two individuals had just stolen two GPS units from Best Buy and were leaving the area in a vehicle.

NHPD say two of their officers were already near the store when they tried to stop the driver of the suspected vehicle from leaving the scene. The suspects continued to flee in the vehicle, with police in pursuit.

Police followed the suspects through the parking lot near Michael's, through and behind WalMart, and into the Barnes and Noble parking lot where the passenger in the car leapt from the vehicle.

The passenger then ran through the parking lot, crossed Commercial Drive where he then led police on a foot pursuit and, in an attempt to evade capture, the vehicle's passenger, now on foot, ran through an approximate five-foot deep creek.

According to a witness at the scene, that passenger - Lewis J. Moore Jr., 31, of Utica, was found hiding in bushes behind a New York Mills residence in the area of Royal Brook Lane by an off-duty corrections officer.

The witness, New York Mills resident, Marie Masca, said the Corrections Officer ordered Moore to the ground. When Moore refused, the Corrections Officer tackled Moore and detained him until police arrived on the scene, Masca said.

Police say Moore was arraigned in the Town of New Hartford Court on a charge of Petit Larceny and sent to the Oneida County Correctional Facility in lieu of $600 cash bail.

Moore will return to New Hartford Court at a later date.

The second suspect, who was driving the fleeing vehicle during the chase, was identified as David V. Benner.

An arrest warrant was issued by the Town of New Hartford Court on Tuesday morning and Benner was taken into custody at The New York State Parole Office where he was held on a parole violation.

Benner’s parole stems from a manslaughter conviction back in 1994.

Benner was arraigned in the Town of New Hartford Court where he was sent to the Oneida County Correctional Facility in lieu of $600 cash bail.

Benner will return to New Hartford Court at a later date.

crimes up in oneida county one of these guys are on parole and the other one has been in and out of jail. the 4 local prisons have recently closed inmate housing units , freeing about 500 inmate beds. where did the inmates go ? released , paroled, 400 to 500 convicted felons running around and these closing have happened state wide. they had parole hearings on veterns day, a federal holiday. why, the govnor is pushing hard for the early release of convicted felons to save moneybut atwhatcost

does either of the new hartford judges know how to read ??? moore has at least a dozen arrests and i think that number is being generous !! 600 dollars bail is a slap in the face to law abiding citizens. he should get the maximum time allowed by law if found guilty, but i know how the d.a. 's office and new hartford court works.... they dont !!!! he will get a slap on the wrist-just wait and see..
