UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Mohawk Valley now has a 24 hour resource for families affected by Alzheimer's Disease.

The ribbon was cut Wednesday afternoon at the office on Genesee Street, in Utica. A dementia care expert is available to answer questions 24 hours a day. The Alzheimer's Association says the disease destroys the cells in the brain. It's difficult for patients to form new memories.

So the new Mohawk Valley office prepares caregivers for the future, always planning one step ahead, "more than 70 percent of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease are cared for in the home. What we find is that individuals who are those caregivers are working, are trying to arrange for the necessary services..to insure that the safety and care for loved one is where it needs to be," says Cathy James of the Alzheimer's Association.

Help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The number to call is 1-800-272-3900 or on the web at alzcny.org.
