Students work with LEGO's all in the name of science

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - They're programming a robot to navigate a themed obstacle course in less than two and a half minutes. They're also building the obstacle course and researching the theme and they're all younger than 14!

E.R. Hughes School in New Hartford has two 'First Lego League' teams this year: The Robo-Spartans and Climoze. This year's them is 'climate connections.'

The 9 through 14-year-old students build the robot and obstacle course from lego pieces and researched their own corresponding climate-related  projects.

The students 'think' they're having fun but they're actually learning a lot about engineering, science, math and teamwork.

"My favorite thing to do is program and I also like researching about our theme this year. We researched fish in Hinckley Lake," said one student.

"This is my favorite thing in the world; programming building and working with our team members," said another.

The Climoze team will be heading to Clarkson University on Saturday for an official competition if they win, it's on to the World Festival in Atlanta. The Robo-Spartans team will be heading to Marist College for a qualifying competition after which they may also be on their way to Atlanta if they should win.
