Senator Joe Griffo proposes new legislation
(WKTV) - This week's case of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich being arrested on corruption charges and the question of who will replace him, is bringing a renewed interest in legislation regarding special elections here in New York. Blagojevich was arrested this week on corruption charges. Federal investigators say they have taped conversations where the Illinois Governor talked about accepting money in return for an appointment to Barack Obama's empty U.S. Senate seat. State Senator Joe Griffo of Rome believes a vacancy of an elected position should be filled with a special election, not an appointment, "When I first proposed this two years ago, there was only one case. Now there's several cases and we have a national issue that is unfolding before all of us so maybe we'll get more support and interest in this and I hope the public would agree with this because I believe it's their choice." Griffo says he will re-introduce his legislation this week. Right now here in New York State, we have an appointed Governor, appointed Comptroller and if Attorney General Andrew Cuomo fills Hillary Clinton's Senate seat as talked about, we will have an appointed Attorney General besides an appointed U.S. Senator. State-wise Griffo feels the people's choice outweighs the cost of holding a special election, the main reason the law is the way it is to keep the state's cost's down, "And I think when you have the possibility of four or five of your top state-wide officials are all appointed, that's troubling and I think the people should have the right to decide who should be their representative, who should be their executive." And at the same time eliminate the possibility of any type of corruption, when it comes to an appointment. Most Popular |
