Paterson proposes flat budget to fill $15B deficit
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The world has changed and we have to adjust to it.
Those are the words of Gov. David Paterson as he discussed his state budget proposal for the next fiscal year. Paterson is releasing details of his spending proposal today in Albany. His budget plan for the 2009-2010 fiscal year includes some layoffs of the state work force and nearly $700 million dollars in school aid. New York governor's usually don't release their budget proposals until January. But Paterson is presenting the budget a month early to try to deal with what he calls a historic fiscal crisis facing the Empire State. Paterson says state leaders have to streamline government in order to cut costs. His spending plan calls for merging seven state agencies with other departments and closing underutilized state facilities. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
