Reviving the state sales tax on clothing: shoppers react

(WKTV) - One of the state's cost cutting measures is by reinstating the state sales tax on clothing.

Currently, shoppers do not pay a state sales tax (only a county sales tax) on clothing and footwear purchases up to $110.

But reviving such a sales tax brought about some bleak reactions from shoppers:

"I guess if you have to buy something still, you're going to have to buy clothing regardless of the price," said one young man. "If you want it, you're gonna have it."

"I'd shop a lot less definitely," said one teenage girl.

"Well, my husband and I, we pay cash most of the time, so we buy what we can now as it is," said a young woman as she carried her baby through the mall. "And I think that state sales tax would make that even harder."

"I might shop out of the area," said one woman.

"Every tax effects us and we're looking at possibly more increases in school taxes," said one another woman as she walked through the mall. "It's too much. It's gotta stop."

"I buy a lot, said one female shopper. "Especially clothes. It's nice not to have the sales tax on the. It'd be great if they were to keep it off."

If the sales tax is reinstated, in its place would be two, one-week periods where clothing and footwear purchases up to $500 would be exempt from state sales tax.
