ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - A lot of scary rhetoric was tossed around in Albany but it all boils down to two words: it's bad. Things like gassing up your car, going to the gym, buying a bottle of wine, all these can cost you more if the Governor's budget goes through as is.

The Governor told lawmakers assembled to hear his budget address that we're facing the worst fiscal downturn in our economy since The Great Depression. The Governor proposed a bold, daring, some fear damaging, budget, to help New York State recover.

"Over $4 billion in new taxes, that's going to hit across the board and also a lack of job creation and emphasis on economic development, that's going to hurt us in the Mohawk Valley," says Senator James Seward.

"We have to delve into the details and really take a look at what he is actually doing with these taxes and fees and how much they amount to and what we can do about an alternative," added Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito.

This is only a proposal; a proposal the Governor released 5 weeks earlier than the state constitution says he has to, so lawmakers could get a jump on it and pass a budget by March 1st, a month before the deadline. The Governor says doing so would save the state around $1 billion.

The Governor told lawmakers this isn't the time to throw stones or criticize his budget, but rather, come forward with any suggestions to ease its pain without diminishing its effectiveness.
