Man accused of Rutger Street shooting pleads not-guilty at arraignment
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The man indicted by a grand jury last week on murder charges was in Oneida County Court for an arraignment Wednesday, where he pleaded not-guilty. Jameil Peak is accused of shooting James Johnson, 38, multiple times in the chest outside of 740 Rutger Street, where Johnson's girlfriend lived, in September. Peak was already jailed on parole violation charges when police charged him with murder. Police say Peak is no stranger to the criminal justice system; that he was incarcerated for an alleged parole violation when they charged him with murder. Utica's Public Safety Commissioner says Peak was on parole for a robbery in Utica, and that he was back in the Oneida County Jail for allegedly violating that parole by giving police a false name when they attempted to question him about Johnson's murder.
