NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The nation's retailers look forward to this last Saturday before Christmas. It is one of the busiest shopping days of the season.
Today, we took a trip to Sangertown Square in New Hartford, where just about every shopper we talked with told us they are spending less this year.
It is a tough time for Americans, as the nation's economic woes have hit just about everyone.
Utica resident Tennille Brown, when asked if her two young children will be getting everything they want this Christmas, "a little bit of what they want." Not everything? "No, not everything...not this year."
A Gallup Poll conducted after President Bush signed this fall's $700 billion dollar bailout to rescue the nation's financial institutions, showed 35 percent of Americans said would spend less this year, and on average they would spend about 100 dollars less for Christmas in 2008 than they did in 2007.
Sangertown Square gift wrapping volunteer Tracy Rosati says "we're definitely trying to make them spend money, we're trying to boost the economy here...we're doing our part."
Shopper Mike Robinson of Remsen resident says he's spending "probably, half of what I spent last year, gotta cut back." And do you think you will be shopping after christmas to try to get some deals? "No, not at all." This is it? "This is it."
A Sangertown Square mall spokesperson says things are right on track. Alison Cahalan, Sangertown Square Marketing Director says "this year is as strong as, if not more so than last year, and this weekend, particularly, we're looking forward to it. It's the last big weekend before Christmas. Our merchants are excited and we know Saturday is a big day, the final Saturday before Christmas, so we're excited to see a lot of people here in the center."
However, Miranda Gelen who manages the Touch of Nature kiosk at Sangertown Square admits, "it's less busy. I think a lot of people cannot buy a lot of stuff because of the economic situation, but I think it will be fine after our new President."
