NY governor, lawmakers visit troops in Iraq

ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK (AP) - Paterson spent today in Iraq with Reps. Steve Israel of Long
Island and Anthony Weiner of Queens. The three Democrats were
joined by Republican Reps. Tom Cole of Oklahoma and Ed Whitfield of
Kentucky.

The three New York politicians are critical of the Bush
administration policies that launched the Iraq war. But they're
noting that the situation in Iraq has improved and expressing hope
that President-elect Barack Obama will preside over an orderly
withdrawal.

Obama has said he will consult with commanders in Iraq and
senior civilian defense officials before carrying out his campaign
promise to end the war.

I agree with taxpayer. Why is he going over there? He can't see the changes, not to poke fun, but it's true. Our state is such a terrible budget crisis, and yet they are goinig to Iraq. I guess it was part of the 21K rug for the mansion. I really do support the troops, but I think celebrities and not Governers should be going to see our troops.

What a waste of money. I support our troops but we dont need to fly people over there to thank them. Thank them by sending over stuff they need.

Are state governors responsible for foreign policy now? Not to mention the tax money spent as alread commented about previously. Let's decrease welfare spending and get more people working, then we won't need a tax on eating, drinking and breathing in this state!

As tough as times are, look at the money spent on this trip. It could possibly fund three or four schools.

How can we (New York) afford to send our Governor to Iraq if our budget is so large? This trip doesn't make any sense if we are trying to cut costs.
