Royce Beck indicted for fatal hit and run
LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - A man charged with the hit and run death of his female acquaintance back in August, which subsequently lead law enforcement on a cross-county manhunt, has been formally indicted in Lewis County Court, the Lewis County District Attorney said. Royce Beck, 41, of Ava, has been indicted on charges of first and second-degree vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting it, third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving while ability impaired by the combined use of alcohol and drugs, criminally negligent homicide. While he was in Lewis County Court on Friday when he was indicted, he has not yet been arraigned. That has been adjourned until January 9. Beck has been held in the Lewis County Jail without bail since he turned himself in back on August 23. The charges Beck faces stem from the August 20 hit and run that occurred on Osceola Road in the Town of Lewis, which left Debra Royce, 54, of Holland Patent dead. According to prosecutors, Beck was fighting with Debra Royce while driving a car belonging to his employer. Prosecutors say Beck did not have permission to drive the car, and was also doing so while under the combined influence of marijuana and alcohol. Beck told prosecutors that he and Royce had an on-again, off-again relationship for the past two years. Back in August, Beck told police that he had gone to a bar in the Town of Floyd with a co-worker, and then to one in Barneveld with Royce and the co-worker. After the trip to the bar, Beck claims he took Royce to West Leyden to get marijuana. It was on that trip that the duo began to argue, and Royce opened the passenger side door. Beck tells prosecutors that he tried to help keep Royce from falling out of the moving vehicle, but that he was unable to keep her from doing so. Beck claims he then moved the body off of the roadway before continuing away from the scene. According to the New York State Criminal Justice website, Beck is a Level 2 sex offender, and was arrested in January 1997 for sexual abuse against a 16 year old girl. I am so sick of the victim blaming.... he should be in jail anyways for his sex offense. He has a history of domestic violence, so he should be in jail for murder, it was just coincidence that he ran over his GF? That poor woman deserves some justice and so does that child he violated. We all would have got out, moved her to the side of the road and continued on our way. He's getting an unfair shake!!! Inappropriate?
