Ilion rings in 2009 with its own ball drop

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - Many are flocking to Times Square in New York City to ring in the New Year, but with a year that's brought a number of hits to the economy, many are choosing to stay closer to home.

It isn't New Year's Eve without a ball drop, and the Village of Ilion - for the third year in a row - is looking to bring that annual New York City tradition right here to the Mohawk Valley.

The Ilion Fire Department has once again designed a New Year's ball, which will be raised 80 feet into the air and dropped from above the Ilion Fire Department during the countdown into 2009.

The Red Cross served refreshments, and things were kept festive courtesy of Fiberdyne, which handed out party hats and noisemakers throughout the celebration.
