January 2009 is National Blood Donor Month, organizations encourage your participation
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - January 2009 is National Blood Donor Month and multiple organizations are encouraging people to donate blood this month. The goal is to help ensure that blood is available to patients whenever and wherever it is needed. The American Association of Blood Banks, in conjunction with America’s Blood Centers and The American Red Cross is celebrating National Blood Donor Month. According to their announcement, the first of the year is when blood levels are low. School breaks, flu season and inclement weather are all cited as ways to limit the amount of blood donated. If you are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are healthy you are eligible to donate blood. 16 year olds can give blood with the same criteria as above but need a signed parental consent form. All blood types are needed but if you are "O" type, you are a universal donor, meaning anyone can receive your blood type in an emergency situation. To find a blood drive that will fit into your schedule please call 315-866-2890 or 315-733-4666, or log onto www.donatebloodnow.org. Most Popular
