Tubing officially open at Val Bialis

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - After weeks of speculating when, or if, tubing would take place at Val Bialis; the questions were answered.  Thursday was the official first night.

The project manager for the hill Bill Smith,  said they would have loved to have been open on their target date, of Christmas week, but it simply came down to bad luck.  "The weather didn't hold out for us, it was the wrong time for everything," Smith said.  "It would be too cold certain times and the equipment wouldn't run, and other times it was too rainy and muddy."

Thursday night there were ten tubing lanes open.  "We made a lot of snow," Smith said.  "We have a three or four foot base of snow, and as long as the weather holds out we can still continue to make more snow."

Smith believes the best part of tubing at Val Bialis is the fact you don't have to walk back up the 60-foot hill.  Instead you can ride the magic carpet.  The magic carpet is a conveyor belt type machine, that will pull you up the hill.

Smith estimates the tubing hill will be open until March, and hopes the ski lift will open this weekend.

Tubing tickets are $18 dollars.

I agree about the snowboarding going up this year. I would understand if it went up and they actuall did something to the hill to make it better but they dont care about the snowboarders or skier because if they did that shoulda been done before the snowtubing hill or atleast not raise the price when you havent improved it at all sure you say you wanna make a park but without it in place right now its not right to charge 20 for what you to be 10 and a few years ago only 5 bucks

NOt only did the price of tubing go up, but so did skiing and snowboarding. It used to cost my husband and I 20 bucks to go snowboarding for a couple of hours in the evening. Now that price is going to double because of the snowtubing lanes that I dont even use. And when I called Val bialis they told me that their lights arent even working for night skiing. Come one! Give me a break. I will absolutley refuse to go there anymore and I urge everyone else to follow this example.

Let me get this straight. 100's of locals would use this hill for free on weekends and now the city waits to charge $18 each. Lot's of luck. I hope everyone boycotts this facility and it ends up going back to the free hill it was meant to be. The Proctors would be outraged by such greed.

18$ per ticket for a family of say four. That's almost 80$ to go tubing. Is that fee for the season or per session. If it is per session, there's NO WAY people are going to use it on a regular basis!!

$18 for one kid... Is that for the full day? Thanks my kids can walk up the hill.. That is a high price for tubing. I guess the overweight kids that play video games all day may get outside now but get very little exercise...

I think the price they're charging is ridiculous. A weekend ticket is $20 a person for 2 hours!! It would cost me $100 for my family to go sledding?! No thank you. I'm not going to pay through the nose for something I can do for free elsewhere. I don't think I'm the only one in Utica who feels this way. It's only a matter of time before they have to lower prices or go out of business.

charging to go sledding on the parkway? are you kidding me? The Proctors gave all that land to the city to have as parks for FREE. At the prices they want to charge in a depressed area like Utica, forget about it, they are out of their minds.

18 bucks? what a joke. I guess thats another slap in the face for the Utica area. It costs 0nly $10 per day for tubing in Taberg, so my family and I will continue to go there. How in the world could an average family of four afford to tube in utica with the price being so high, especially in today's economy? Thanks Mayor, I'll make sure to vote for you next time, not.

16-20 Dollars ? Do these people think this is Vermont ? Sure, people will turn out this weekend, then it'll fizzle out. They're going to have to realize that this is an economically depressed region and disposable income is pretty low. The hill in Taberg is far more inexpensive and with the lower price of gas isn't too far to drive anymore. Hopefully they'll wise up and lower the prices (10-12 dollars) and then maybe people will come out. Other than the price it's a great idea for Utica.

I don't foresee too many people in Utica paying $18 for a 2hr ticket.
