Amid frigid temperatures, home care is crucial

By PAT BAILEY

(WKTV) - There are a lot of things to take into consideration when dealing with the cold temperatures - first and foremost is bundle up.

When your dealing with these types of low temperatures - even the least exposed part of the body could freeze or lead to hypothermia.

And of course your going to want to bring those pets in at night.

But one thing your also going to want to take care of that you may not quite think about, is your home.

Phil Carrabin was braving the cold temperatures Wednesday to clear away ice that has been built up on a Utica home. But instead of chiseling away at the ice, he is steam cleaning it.

"I'm the first of its kind," Carriban said. "It's an old concept twisted around to a new application."

Carriban says it is critical to take care of your home, especially your roof in these cold temperatures.

He says the ice build up can cause severe damage inside and out. And that's why it is import to clear away the built up ice as soon as possible.

"It's very important, very important," Carriban said. "You're going to end up damaging the shingles, you're going to end up damaging your inner structure. A lot of times the water that gets in will be soaked up by the insulation on the edge of the roof area, and therefore your losing even more heat as the problem progresses."
