ONEONTA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Heart Run & Walk season is in full-swing as SUNY Oneonta hosted their annual satellite event Saturday morning. About 500 participants were expected to participate in the eighth annual event, about 200 more than last year.

Basset Health Care's heart division is a major sponsor in the event, based out of nearby Cooperstown. They will sponsor the Basset Heart Care telethon presented by NEWSChannel 2 on March 6 and 7.

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. This annual event works to increase awareness and raise money for the very debilitating and lethal group of diseases.

On Friday, Americans participated in national "Go Red For Women" day where people are encouraged to wear red clothing also to support the heart disease cause

America's Greatest Heart Run & Walk will be held on March 7, 2009 with the Health and Fitness expo kicking off the night before.
