Burlington Flats man killed while serving in Iraq

BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Burlington Flats man has been killed while serving overseas. He was on his first combat tour in Iraq.

Now friends and family are mourning the loss of Michael Mayne, age 21. Mayne was a 2006 graduate of Edmeston Central Schools. The Associated Press reports he was killed in a firefight just northeast of Baghdad.

On his MySpace page, Mayne wrote he enjoyed hunting, shooting and fishing. Already, there are several comments on his page from his friends expressing their great loss.

According to the Army's Public Affairs Department, Mayne was a part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team attached to the 25th Infantry Division.

At his former high school in Edmeston, the Superintendent says grief councilors are being made available.

Coming up tonight on the Live at Five Newshour, a look at how the Otsego County community of Burlington Flats and the school district are remembering this fallen hero.
