BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Lee Mayne says his family has been through "hell," a sentiment that resonates throughout the small Otsego County community known as Burlington Flats where Michael Mayne was loved and respected.

"Mike was a really outgoing and personable, fun and really sarcastic."

His best friend, Thomas Tophoven said Mayne could always put a smile on someone's face.

His death has shattered many areas of the community, especially his former school, Edmeston Central.

Superintendent David Rowley said many of Mayne's family have gone through the school system, and his father Lee has worked there for more than 10 years.

Rowley who remembers Mike Mayne as a hard worker, passionate about serving his country.

As an Eagle Scout, Mayne built a series of flag poles that sit just feet from his family's home in Burlington Flats. Tonight they soar atop poles at half staff in his memory.

Lee Mayne says his son's remains are en route to Dover tonight.

School officials say they were told the funeral will likely be held at the school next week.
