8 layoffs at Excellus; employees given opportunity to apply for other positions

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A day after it was revealed that re-organization efforts at Excellus BlueCross Blue Shield would result in layoffs, NEWSChannel 2 now learns that the total number of employees being let go will be 8.

The health insurer said that the layoffs come as it is "re-aligning its competitive position."

They called the layoffs minimal in terms of Excellus' overall size across the region, saying "the job cuts represent a small percentage of the health plan's more than 3,600 workers throughout upstate New York and are part of a reorganization to achieve greater efficiencies."

The company says that employees being displaced are being given opportunities to apply for other positions within the corporation for which they may be qualified.

According to Excellus officials, last year the company began taking steps to curb administrative spending without resorting to any layoffs -- including restrictions on hiring and promotions, an elimination of open positions and an early retirement incentive program -- that resulted in a reduction of nearly 530 positions within the health plan or a 13% reduction from a fully staffed workforce.
