BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Hundreds lined a number of Otsego County rural roads Sunday morning to honor a fallen soldier. The body of 21-year-old U.S. Army Corporal Michael Mayne was flown into Syracuse around 9:00 a.m., then a procession through Central New York brought him to Edmeston where his funeral service will be held this week. Hundreds lined the section of Route 51 in Burlington Flats where Mayne grew up, the hearse passed right by his family's home shortly after noon.
Family, friends and people who never met Mayne turned out to honor him and his sacrifice. Close family friend Sharon Simmons says "this says a lot for our community, we're a very small community, as you can see everybody loved him."
Mayne's uncle, Richard Volpe says he remembers clearly his last conversation with his nephew before he left for Iraq last year, "I told him to keep his head down, but he was his own man and proud to do what he was doing. Volpe adds "he gave his life for what he loved...if your time is up, there's no better way to go."
Calling hours are Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be held at Edmeston Central School on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.
