Respects paid to fallen soldier in Burlington Flats

BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. (WKTV) - It has been a long journey home for Army Corporal Michael Mayne, killed last week during military operations in Iraq.

On Monday, the community paid its respects to the Burlington Flats native and his grieving family.

Mayne, 21, was killed by insurgents near Baghdad one week ago. His body returned home Sunday and was met with dozens of residents from the small Otsego County village.

Calling hours run from 2-8 p.m. at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church located at 6007 Route 51 in the village.

Mayne's funeral is being held Tuesday at 11a.m. at Edmeston Central School, and more than 1,000 are expected.

Mayne has received numerous posthumous awards, including a Bronze Star. He is the 7th local soldier to lose their life since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom began.
