WATERVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Police say they know a fatal fire in Waterville Monday night was started in the bedroom of the 56 year-old woman who died.
The body of that woman - Linda Moser - was found in the downstairs apartment of the two-story house on Stafford Avenue in Waterville. A six month old boy and his grandparents were able to escape from their upstairs apartment round 5:30 Monday.
The water that was used to put out the heavy smoke and flames is now frozen to the Waterville home.
Charles Cresswell and his wife brought her dad back to the scene, Tuesday, just a day after the elderly man and his wife escaped the flames with their six month old grandson.
"We're feeling blessed today," Charles Cresswell said. "We definitely wouldn't want to see this happen to anybody. Were picking up the pieces and moving on, were a tough family."
Fire was so intense that it took crews nearly two hours to get under control. Moser, the woman killed in the fire, lived downstairs from the Cresswell's family - the Andersons.
Charles Cresswell says not only did he know the 56 year old woman who died in this fire, but so too did his in-laws. Cresswell says after knowing her for a short time, they are confident she started the fire herself.
"We're thinking it is arson. She had trouble before, she tried killing herself," Cresswell said.
State Police, who remained on the scene Tuesday, did not go into detail about the investigation.
Rose Hartle, younger sister to the deceased, contacted NEWSChannel 2 and had the following to say in response to the comments made Tuesday:
"They didn't know my sister," Hartle said. "Until you walked a mile in my sisters shoes don't, condemn her. By malicious comments like that, you have hurt my family. You have hurt her. It's our sorrow. Our loss. They lost their home. They did not lose someone they loved."
