Congressman Arcuri responds to support of NYRI project by 4 congressmen

(WKTV) - The fight over the proposed power line project is becoming a battle between upstate and downstate.

The plans have caused a great deal of controversy in our area. Opponents worry about what the line would do to property values, and say it would only benefit downstate.Supporters of the project say it will create jobs, lower energy costs and be good for the environment.

Four U.S. Congressmen from New York, Representatives Peter T. King (R), Michael E. McMahon (D), Edolphus Towns (D) and Yvette Clarke (D), have declared their bi-partisan support for New York Regional Interconnect (NYRI) and its $2.1 billion private investment in a proposed power line for New York State.

On Friday, the Congressmen jointly signed and sent a letter to Governor David Paterson, urging his support for NYRI and its project.

In response to hearing this, Congressman Michael Arcuri said:

"NYRI has always tried to pit Upstate against Downstate in an attempt to hide the truth - that their proposal will not alleviate the bottleneck and will not solve the city's energy problems. I think it is a credit to the work that we have done that only 4 out of 29 members of the New York congressional delegation agreed to sign onto this letter. We will continue to work with our Senators and Governor Paterson to stop NYRI once and for all and get to the business of actually addressing New York's energy future."
