Letter from Congressmen supporting NYRI Power Line project
Congressman Pete King For Immediate Release March 10, 2009 Reps. King, McMahon, Towns, and Clarke Send Letter to Gov. Paterson in Support of New York Regional Interconnect Proposed Transmission Line Contact: Kevin Fogarty (202) 225-7896 WASHINGTON DC-On Friday, March 6, 2009, Reps. Peter King (R-NY), Michael McMahon (D-NY), Ed Towns (D-NY), and Yvette Clarke (D-NY), sent a letter to New York Governor David Paterson to express their "strong support for the New York Regional Interconnection ("NYRI")." The proposed NYRI line is within an area designated by the U.S. Department of Energy as a National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor, where transmission projects are being encouraged to address the country's aging electrical grid infrastructure. The NYRI transmission line would be the first major upgrade to New York's upstate-downstate transmission grid in twenty years. NYRI (www.nyri.us) plans to make more than a $2 billion investment in New York by building an electrical transmission line to run from upstate where electric generation is abundant to downstate, where electricity demand is high. The proposed 190-mile, 1,200 megawatt transmission line will increase electric grid reliability while enabling greater economic development and the increased use of clean, renewable energy sources, such as wind power. "NYRI's transmission line would help to ensure a sound energy future for New York, bringing economic, environmental and national security benefits, and we're proud of our bipartisan support for this project," said King. Invoking the problems of blackouts and "brownouts" that New York has experienced over the past several years, particularly during summer months, the letter to Gov. Paterson states: A project like NYRI could help alleviate the severe and growing energy problem that New York faces every year, while also bringing significant economic development to the State. Without the construction of new transmission lines in New York, we are concerned that the energy needs of millions of New Yorkers will not be met.
