Spartans players and coach reflect on victory

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - This is the New Hartford Spartans' second overall state championship, winning the first in 1997. According to the team, they were confident through the entire season and post-season.

Following their victory, NEWSChannel 2 spoke with some players and their head coach for some reflections on the game.

Senior Andrew Kelleher: "It hasn't even sunk in yet. It's pretty intense. We thought we were going to get here, and now that we finally did it, it's pretty mind-blowing."

Senior Tom Fiorentino: We had incredible talent on defense this year, that's why we only gave up six goals (in the playoffs), and our offense was great. I think we had the full package this year, and that's why we went all the way."

Senior Patrick Ryan: "We knew that the only team that could beat us was ourselves...we battled through the whole playoffs and stuck it out and we got the whole thing. "

Senior Jack Silberlicht: "This whole experience is just unreal. Twenty-four of my greatest buddies in there coming out having a good time for 45 minutes, and now we're state champs forever. It's a dream come true."

Head Coach John Cunningham: "I think it's the competitiveness that burns in these guys, in practice or in the games especially. You can see the frenzy that goes on that they create themselves, and then somebody else steps on the ice and wants to do it again. So it's really some kind of a chemistry they have among themselves; I've just been along for the ride. "
