New report shows more than 36% increase in Alzheimer's Disease in Oneida County
(WKTV) - A new report was released Tuesday outlining the rise in health care costs for people diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia, and Oneida County is leading the pack.
Among the findings from the Alzheimer's Association, about 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. According to the report, health care costs can triple for those diagnosed with the disease. In Oneida County the number people living with Alzheimer's has grown over 36% in the past seven years - that makes it the largest growing area in Central New York. "They are needing more in the way of homecare services, community based services and long term services over an extended period," said Cathy Hames, CEO of the Alzheimer's Association. When asked if she believed that's because they're being diagnosed earlier or because people are living longer, James said "I think it's both."
