GPO Federal Credit Union warns consumers of new scam

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The GPO Federal Credit Union is warning consumers of a new scam. They say that scammers have been attempting to obtain credit card and debit information from unsuspecting victims using telephone recordings, text messaging and email.

The calls were reportedly made to both credit union members and non-members. The calls are typically made from outside of the United State, so very difficult to trace.

Experts say it just takes a few minutes for a criminal to reproduce a credit or debit card and start using the account and make purchases or withdrawal money.

GPO says they have reported the incident to local authorities as well as the United States Secret Service and the F.B.I. Officials say that recent scams have taken place in Spain and Ireland.

John A Prumo, the president and C.E.O. of the GPO Federal Credit Union says, "These phone calls are not generated from GPO Federal Credit Union. Unfortunately, this latest scam again used GPO's name."

"These scammers pick a series of numbers - like all numbers within a community. Then, then hope that someone will release confidential information. They hope a few people fall for the scam because that's how they make their money."

The GPO Federal Credit Union invites you to find more information on avoiding identity theft on their website.
