Arcuri-Clinton Propose Middle Class Tax Cuts (12:20 pm Update)

Jerry Walsh

Congressional Candidate Michael Arcuri teamed up with U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton this morning in Binghamton to propose a middle class tax cut for working families.  The plan include three main points:

--College Tuition Tax Credit - The plan calls for a $3,000 tax credit per year for tuition and books

--Expansion of the Child Tax Credit - Arcuri says the current child tax credit system is too complicated.  He is proposing one simplified child tax credit.

--Mortgage Tax Credit to First-Time Homebuyers - Arcuri says the costs associated with buying a home are increasing at the fastest rate since 1978.  He says current tax deductions help wealthier households rather than all households.

“For far too long, middle class families have been taxed to the limit.  Instead of giving huge breaks to billionaires, big oil executives, and companies that ship jobs abroad, we should help working families succeed,” said Arcuri.  “This Congress has voted time and time again to make their cronies even richer, while

’s hard-working, tax-paying families struggle to stay afloat.”

Ray Meier's campaign responded by pointing out his record in the state legislature.  In a written release, Meier's campaign says he helped to pass a New York State tuition tax deduction program in 2000.  The release also points to funding for local colleges and increased assistance to families through the Tuition Assistance Program.

"Senator Meier has a record of accomplishment, demonstrating not just a commitment to education but concrete results," Meier for Congress campaign spokeswoman Nicole Austin said in the release.
