FLY CREEK, N.Y. (WKTV) - If you drive by the a local cider mill and orchard today, you may notice something out of the ordinary.

The staff at the Fly Creek Cider Mill is busy plucking its newest crop from rows and rows of white speckled trees - mushy mallows.

"This is our first successful harvest," said Bill Michaels, co-owner of the Cider Mill. "The cold weather and the mild March produced a great crop. We've had good bloom and great growth...excellent mallow."

You can eat them raw like, but we're told they're even better after being processed - and juiced into wine.

More details on tonight's Live at Five Newshour.

Also the key to a perfect tasting mallow - it has something to do with its harvest date...April 1.
