Local Social Security Group Praises Arcuri

Utica, NY - Today, Citizen Action of New York announced their support for Democrat Mike Arcuri in his bid for Congress. Arcuri has vowed to oppose risky privatization plans that endanger Social Security.

"Social Security is a promise we made to seniors 71 years ago, and nearly 180,000 thousand New York families in the 24th District rely on it. I will never support any effort to privatize or otherwise endanger this critical program," said Arcuri. "In Congress, I intend to work with my colleagues to address the solvency issue-but I think rather than making Social Security a partisan football, we should be trying to make this program stable for generations to come."

Arcuri signed Citizen Action's pledge to "work to keep the promise of Social Security and publicly oppose the President's July 2006 proposal to divert $721 billion from the Social Security Trust Fund to create private accounts."

The pledge also says that Arcuri will oppose any Social Security plan that "cuts guaranteed benefits to pay for private accounts; weakens the system by diverting money from the Social Security Trust Fund to pay for private accounts; increases the federal deficit to pay for private accounts; and/or increases the retirement age."
