UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - After being featured on NEWSChannel 2, U.S. Marshals say Ali Shabazz has turned himself in to authorities.
The United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force announces the capture of federal fugitive Ali Shabazz. Shabazz was wanted by the United States Marshals Service for Escape. Shabazz was serving a 46 months sentence for Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute and Conspiracy to Distribute Cocaine. Shabazz had been transferred from a federal detention center to the Pavilion Halfway House in Syracuse, NY.
On March 24, 2009 Shabazz was allowed to leave the halfway house to seek employment. He was directed to return to the facility by 2:00 pm. He failed to do so. The United States Marshals Service obtained an arrest warrant for Shabazz charging him with Escape. On April 8, 2009 Shabazz made the decision to surrender to authorities after being informed by family members in Utica that he had been featured in the local media as the "Fugitive of the Week".
Shabazz traveled to Utica where family members drove him to the Oneida County Jail where Shabazz surrendered without incident to investigators from the Oneida County Sheriffs Office and the NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force.
