HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Chemotherapy is a long and difficult journey....but it helps when it ends with a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach for you and about nine of your closest friends.

Julia Bunce, of Herkimer, has had a year that no 16-year-old should have. After being diagnosed with leukemia last May, she began a very aggressive chemotherapy schedule which had the desired outcome: almost immediate remission.

On Thursday, she and her friends are in a Winnebago, on their way to the Spring Break trip of a lifetime.

"My three best friends are going, my parents, my brother and his friend and one of my friends' parents are going so it's going to be a lot of people in the Winnebago but then in Myrtle Beach I want to hang out on the beach and just have fun," says the 16-year-old cancer survivor.

A family friend who works for Mc Donald's approached Joanie Grande of the Mac-Clark Corporation. Grande directed the Bunce family to former local NHL player Rob Esche's "Save of the Day" foundation.

The foundation grants wishes for local children battling life-threatening illnesses. Julia wrote a letter of application and her wish for a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach was granted. The foundation is paying for the Winnebago, gas and the condo the group is staying in in Myrtle Beach. They'll return next Saturday, April 18 with Julia's dad at the wheel.

As for the Julia's future, she is considered in remission, but will still be getting a much less aggressive 'maintenance' schedule of chemotherapy through the fall of next year.

"....it's nothing compared to what I had," says the teen.
