YORKVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - If you have a gas guzzler, and want to trade it in for a more fuel efficient vehicle, you may soon get paid to do it.

U.S. Senator Charles Charles Schumer was in Yorkville on Monday to talk about his proposed legislation called "Cash For Clunkers". He held his press conference outside of the Carbone Pontiac Dealership on Commercial Drive. Auto dealerships are just one entity that would benefit from his idea.

Schumer says it's win, win, win situation. He says "Cash For Clunkers" is great for families, and it's great for the automakers that are in such rough shape, but it's also good for auto dealers like Al Carbone.

Under the proposed plan, Schumer says if you have a vehicle that gets 18 miles per gallon or less, you can trade it in for a car that meets the Government's fuel efficiency standard for the type of car you are buying. Under the program, buyers would be given a voucher ranging from $2,500 to $5,500, depending on the car you are trading in.

Schumer says he has bipartisan backing and hopes to have the legislation passed by Memorial Day.

If it does pass, Schumer says hundreds if not thousands of people right here in the Mohawk Valley alone, would take advantage of the program.
