Post Office reminds: mail taxes before last collection of the day

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Wednesday is the last day to file your taxes. And the U.S.Postal Service says they are prepared to handle the influx of last minute filers.

April 15 is the only day the postal service keeps its doors open late, and individuals will have until midnight Wednesday to file their taxes at designated locations in our region.

"Traditionally, Utica does have a lot of last minute folks who come in to file their taxes," said Jeanee Mooney, the customer service coordinator at Utica's Main Post Office on Pitcher Street.

She said her office expects a 25% increase in mail volume Wednesday, but the staff is prepared to handle the work load.

In previous years, the post office provided individuals with the necessary tax forms. But this year they decided to do away with the service.

Mooney says it's partly due to the down turn of our economy and the increase of on-line users.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, this tax season, the IRS expects electronic returns to exceed last year's record of nearly 90 million taxpayers.

They said with more than 1.2 million users visiting www.usps.com each day, April 15th will be no exception.

Mooney says customers should keep in mind that mail placed in a collection box must be deposited before the last collection time at the post office.

"Make sure you have proper postage on your package because you don't want it to get send back if it's overweight," she said.

The postal service says there are 11 self-service automated postal centers (APCS) in the Albany District, and all provide 24-hour access, unless noted.
