Final flu test case for Oneida County comes back negative; no confirmed cases

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The fourth and final suspected case of the H1N1 virus in Oneida County has come back negative from testing Monday.

This means that there are currently no confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in Oneida County.

Two tests for the H1N1 virus came back negative Saturday in Lewis County. Lewis County does have one probable case which the Center for Disease Control is calling a confirmed case.

The one confirmed case was sent out to be tested on April 28 and came back Friday as a positive case of the swine flu or H1N1 virus. The infected individual had recently traveled to Mexico. They are being treated by their primary care physician and are already on the road to recovery.

President Barack Obama made the flu outbreak a topic in his weekly radio and Internet address to the nation. He says the swine flu strain of concern is so new and poorly understood that it justifies the government's efforts to fight it. He added that human-to-human transmission creates the potential for a pandemic and that's why the U.S. is acting "quickly and aggressively." The president noted that the strain can be defeated by a course of antiviral treatment that's already on hand.

In China, officials quarantined tourists in a Hong Kong Hotel. Hundreds of people, including visitors and employees, were inside as authorities sealed off the hotel. They searched for anyone who had contact with a Mexican tourist who brought the virus into the territory.
