(WKTV) - The Vernon Verona Sherill School District has sent a letter highlighting its opposition to the Oneida County Partnership Plan.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE V.V.S. COMMUNITY ~

The V.V.S. Board of Education respects the right of Oneida County and the Oneida Indian Nation of NY to engage in negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of their differences.

~    A settlement which results in adequate and equitable compensation for each party affected by the settlement.

~    A settlement which fairly considers the interests of those groups and individuals most affected by the settlement.

~    A settlement which enjoys the support of reasoned people who recognize true compromise.

~    A settlement which illustrates a tangible vision for the economic and cultural future of the region.

~    A settlement which resists political pandering to politicians who represent less affected areas of Oneida County yet carry a “bigger political stick.”

~    A settlement that diminishes the potential for future political divisiveness among neighbors in Oneida County.

~    A settlement which is balanced in its financial impact and its affect on future governance issues.

~    A settlement which secures the property tax base for the children, families, and property taxpayers of the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District.

~    A settlement which recognizes, unlike Oneida County, New York State, or the Oneida Indian Nation, the only source of local resources for school districts are property taxes.

~    A settlement which demonstrates an understanding that if you reduce or in any way diminish the responsibility of a certain group of property taxpayers, that responsibility is shifted to the remaining property taxpayers.

~    A settlement which recognizes that it was the lack of clear vision for a shared culture, commerce, and governance by our collective ancestry which resulted in the disputes that trouble our region today and ensures that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

~    A settlement which demonstrates an understanding that the County settling for 14¢ on the $1.00 on a school property tax lien is not a good deal.

It is with sincere regret that after a thoughtful review of the proposed Oneida County Partnership Plan, no evidence of these essential elements can be found.  In fact, the Oneida County Partnership Plan threatens the educational opportunities of every child in the V.V.S. School District now and into the future.  It unfairly abandons the remaining property taxpayers of the school district and shifts further tax burdens on them.  Finally, it lacks the forethought and planning necessary to secure our community’s future well-being.  Therefore, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Board of Education is opposed to the proposed Oneida County Partnership Plan.
