Otsego County offering discount prescription program

OTSEGO COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Otsego County residents can look for their new prescription drug discount cards in the mail beginning Tuesday.

The Otsego County Health Department has partnered with ProAct, Inc, a Pharmacy Benefit Management Company to offer residents a prescription drug discount card that will help defray the rising cost of prescription medication.

ProAct, Inc. will mail more than 29,000 drug cards to households in Otsego County. The cards are scheduled to arrive in residents' homes the week of May 26.

"The prescription drug discount card can provide significant savings for uninsured and underinsured residents of Otsego County," said Heidi Bond Public Health Director. "Residents who have prescription drug coverage can use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plan."

Any Otsego County resident, regardless of age, can participate in the discount program. One discount car may be used for all family members.

"There is no cost to the county or its residents," Bond said.

Participants will save an average of 10-20% on brand name prescriptions and 20-50% on generic drugs.

In Otsego County, the prescription drug card is accepted at 10 pharmacies as well as more than 57,000 pharmacies nationwide.

"We are excited to be working with the Otsego County Department of Health and various agencies within the county to help reduce prescription drug costs for county resident," said Dan Villa, president of ProAct.

The discount cards will also be available at all participating pharmacies as well as the following county agencies, Office for Aging, Department of Social Services, Department of Health and Mental Health Clinic.
