Boilermaker officials say registrations are up

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Boilermaker officials are pouring through hundreds of race applications in preparation for the July 12th Boilermaker.

Race Executive Director Tim Reed says between online and mail-in applications, the race is up by 344 over this time a year ago. It's not just the 15K race, which most participate in, but all also the 5k and walk.

"I think there are a couple of reasons this is happening, first is the fun of this race, the second is that these people, there is a lot of talk in regards to health care, wellness, all those things and people are looking quite frankly at this as an insurance policy to say hey, how can I live a little longer and have a high quality of life," Reed said.

Reed admits the race generally sees a bump right around now because race fees increase June 1.

That said, he's impressed that so many have signed up already.
