Could Harza building be sold?

UTICA, N.Y (WKTV) - Utica's Harza building may soon have a new owner.

Utica Urban and Economic Development officials say the Adirondack Bank has expressed interest in purchasing the Harza building on Genesee Street. A bank official however said that the Bank's owner, Harold "Tom" Clark who also owns several area McDonald's franchises has been involved in a discussion regarding the Harza building site that is unaffiliated with the bank itself.

Utica's Industrial Development Association or IDA is responsible for the care of the building which according to the state is owned by the city.

According to a request for proposals sent out in 2008, the building has been mostly vacant since 2004.

That RFP generated zero applicants according to the city. There have not been any official applications submitted regarding the property according to the city but the bank, city and state are in talks regarding the property.

In March of 2008 International bank, Standard Chartered considered the Harza building before settling on a site in New Jersey.

Adirondack Bank operates 17 branches from Syracuse to Plattsburgh.

According to the city's Urban and Economic Development officials, the bank wants to buy the building to expand its business, not move it's current branch which sits right next to the Harza building.

The city says negotiations center around a mortgage that a previous owner defaulted on to the tune of $3.7 million.
