(WKTV) - The charges against former investigator Robert Risi, mark the fourth time a law enforcement officer has been charged with a crime in the last five months.

Since February, two New York State Troopers have been arrested, a Dolgeville police officer arrested and fired, and now former Herkimer Investigator Robert Risi has been suspended without pay after being indicted for stealing money from an evidence room.

In February, New York State Police Investigator Matthew Sullivan was pulled over for speeding on Route 12 in Trenton. Court documents state Sullivan fled the scene of the arrest, and went home before he turned himself in. He was indicted last month, and now faces 10 total charges including DWI and Fleeing a police officer.

In April state trooper David Volz of Oriskany was charged with stealing mulch. Volz became a trooper in 2006. Police say he used a borrowed dump truck to take mulch from Mohawk Valley mulch in Rome...without paying.

A Dolgeville police officer was charged with criminal mischief. Greg Malta Jr. was arrested by his own department after he allegedly drove his patrol car around the bases of the school's baseball field. Malta Junior was an officer at the time of the alleged incident, but resigned before he was charged.

Wednesday afternoon, a high ranking state police officer says these blemishes against law enforcement are isolated incidents:

"The only thing we can answer is each one of these cases are case specific with the individual. Law enforcement itself is still a much larger number, individuals are still out there defending the law each and every day," says Lt. Troy Little.

Risi's chief, Herkimer Police Chief Joe Malone says he was "shocked" when he found out Risi was involved in the stealing of evidence money.

Malone says this incident does not reflect the integrity of the rest of the Herkimer Police department.

We also found out tonight that another Herkimer Police office, a female cop, has been issued a criminal summons ticket, separate from the Risi's charges.

Chief Malone says the female officer was issued the summons for harassment, but would not comment more on that incident.
