Five high school athletes receive Boilermaker Scholarships

By By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Five local high school athletes are the newest recipients of this year's Utica Boilermaker 15k Road Race Scholarships.

On Friday morning, they were honored for their outstanding achievements or commitments in running at the Radisson Hotel in Utica.

Each student participates in either cross country, track and field, or both. They are nominated by their coaches.

Richard Hunt, the Boilermaker scholarship coordinator, said they created the two categories because they wanted to recognize students who might not have the best times but show great commitment to the sport.

"In distance running, you need commitment. It's vital that you have self discipline, that you have a solid work ethic, and that you stick to a plan to achieve your goals in fitness and in running," Hunt said.

The winners of this year's scholarships are:

Crista Johnson
Ilion High School
Outstanding Commitment to Running

Kelsey Peek
Whitesboro High School
Outstanding Achievement in Running

Tim Phelps
Thomas R. Proctor High School
Outstanding Achievement in Running

Ryan Millar
New Hartford High School
Outstanding Achievement in Running

Hunter Padgett
Clinton High School
Outstanding Commitment to Running

Each winner received prize plaques, a $1,000 check, and a free entry into the 2009 Boilermaker 15k race.
