Second case of swine flu in Lewis County
LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - A second case of the H1N1 virus, also known as the "swine flu" has been identified in Lewis County, health officials said. The Lewis County Health Department reports that it received notification from the Wadsworth State Laboratory in Albany Friday morning of its second confirmed case of H1N! (swine) flu. Health officials say the individual did not have any travel history to Mexico or down state. The individual was not hospitalized and is recovering well at home. "this does not come as a surprise," said Carol Paluck, interim director of the Lewis County Health Department. "with the number of H1N1 cases in New York State, we anticipated that it would only be a matter of time before we had additional confirmed cases." Health officials say they are working to determine who may have been exposed, and that they will be notifying anyone that the patient had close contact with. They will also be monitoring family members for signs of illness. People who have been in close contact with the patient will be advised to go home at the earliest sign of flu-like symptoms. They will be advised to stay at home for at least seven days after the onset of their illness or until at least 24 hours after they are symptom-free. "Our goal is to minimize the spread of the disease in our community," Paluck said. This is the second confirmed case of swine flue in Lewis County. There has also been one confirmed case in Otsego County, as well as in Onondaga County. There are no confirmed cases in Herkimer or Oneida Counties. |
