A time to build or shed businesses?

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV)- The Moose Creek Gift Shop is the latest victim of the recession.

Tucked away more than two miles from the center of the Village of Mohawk sits Moose Creek, a store with everything from cards to candles, to sports gifts and seasonal decorations. Owner JoAnn Knopka hates closing, but began a "going out of business sale" Monday in efforts to shed goods that are not selling.

"This was my dream," she said. "This was my dream when I bought it, and I wanted to, you know, have my retirement and just run it. I love it, and I love the people. And that's what I'm going to miss the most...the people."

She's owned the business for nearly two years. The same site housed a different gift shop for more than a decade.

Forty miles away, a old boutique is re-opening despite the struggling economy.

"...Ladies love to shop but they want bargains. But I've learned if I can get them in this kind of setting, the boutiques are going to make it," said C.J. Behne, owner of C.J Boutique at the Olde Canning Factory.

Behne said her shop was open for more than a decade before briefly closing in 2007 and re-opening last week. Prior to re-opening, her shop employed 13 people and spread throughout the entire first floor of her Vernon home.

Now, she is the only employee, has cut back by several rooms, hours, and is closely watching her orders. She's also negotiating prices with distributors to a greater degree than before.

Most of the changes, she said, were by choice, and not related to the economy. Only time will tell if the new shop will match the success she says the old one had.

As for Moose Creek, Knopka said it's unlikely the shop can remain unless her last ditch effort to sell merchandise is surprisingly successful.
