VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV)-15,000 are expected to attend the New York State Association of Fire Chief's Fire 2009 convention at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino. The event began today and runs through Saturday. It's open to the public, but is not free to the public.

However, tourism officials say the local economy stands to benefit simply by having so many visitors.

"It's wonderful exposure for people who may never have been here before to see the attractions and beauty of Central New York and you know hopefully they will be able to come back," said Kelly Blazosky of the Oneida County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Organizers say Fire 2009 is a great chance for firefighters attending to learn more about their craft and new equipment.

"They get to come here they get to listen to speakers listen to new ideas, meet with vendors, talk about products really get re-integrated then head back to the communities to protect the citizens."

The event runs through Saturday.
